Akan (Asante or Fante) figure, Ghana
wood, pigment, traces of kaolin
7.5" tall
early to mid 20th century
acquired in Paris, France

According to a correspondence I had with Dr. Daniel Mato about this figure, he stated that her head is drawn at a
slant and appears to have been rubbed in the same way they used to rub babies foreheads to give them a
spatulate look, like the face of the moon he was told.  He stated - "I would not be surprised to know that she was
at one time something like an
Akua Ba figure, we forget that not all Akua Ba are abstracted.  Nice face and
remnants of body."
