East African headrest, northern Uganda
wood, animal hide
8" tall x 5" wide x 3.5" deep
early to mid 20th century
ex Dr. Evan Maurer (former Director Minneapolis Institute of Arts)

I've always loved the simple yet elegant forms of these particular
headrests. There isn't usually any detail added to these, but the
carver of this particular example added a slight ridge around the
underneath of the support. It's a detail that you don't realize at
first glance, but once you turn it over and see the care that went
into carving it you'll appreciate it much more.
