Gourd container with removable figural stopper, Tanzania
wood, gourd, plant fiber, beads
7.5" tall (gourd and stopper only)
comes on a nice custom mount

SOLD

Gourds such as this were mainly used as containers for medicines, ointments, pigments, sacred oils and symbolic
substances. Gourds with anthropomorphic stoppers/dippers were sometimes placed on top of a small stool to
serve as an ancestor figure. The stopper in this one has an especially nicely carved female figure. I like how the
upper part of the gourd is a little off center, it gives the figure added character and uniqueness over ones I've had
in the past.
