Bwa Stool, Burkina Faso

13.5” long by 5” wide by 7.25” tall
wood

A very simple but wonderful stool in my opinion. These are often attributed to the Mossi, but the consensus from experts seems to point to the Bwa culture instead and they are often referred to as “kanmbomi”. The neck would have been used as a handle, and I especially enjoy the head and face at the end of the handle. Some stools of this type are depicted with human-like heads and four separate legs with the back legs carved with feet sticking out of the back of them as if a person was on all fours. Even though the head is more human-like on this example, it has an overall zoomorphic feeling to me. Another feature that I like on this stool doesn’t have anything to do with the carving or the form, it is the lines/cracks in the wood that radiate out when viewed from the front and the back. I’ve had this stool for at least 20 years and it has always been one of my favorites.
