Double Sickle Blade, bango or bwagogambanza

Lobala / Mondzombo / Ngbaka / Bondjo, D.R. Congo
Iron, wood
early 20th century
Ex Robert van der Heijden

I like these blades because of their abstract human form any symmetry. Sometimes referred to as “executioner’s blades” the function of these blades was primarily as emblems of rank and status. They were also used ceremonially, notably in initiation rites for young men.

I particularly love the fine details in the blackened part of the blade.
