Asante Seated Female Figure, Ghana

14.5” tall by 7.5” wide by 6” deep
wood, pigment
from a US collection

A wonderful and expressive carving depicting a seated woman. She has one hand outstretched with the palm facing up, and the other arm held out in a position as if she was holding something (there is a hole carved so something could have been placed in there). When I talked to Herbert Cole about this figure he said that it could depict a woman such as the Queen Mother, and in the hand with the palm facing upwards there could have originally been a small bowl placed there, and in the other hand a small umbrella. The figure would have represented protection and good health.

The face on this figure is what originally drew me to it because it is so naturalistic, but with almost exaggerated features to it like the eyes. I also like the depiction of the coiffure. It has been a favorite in my collection for many years and was very prominent during my phase of collecting maternity/mother figures.

There are a couple of very old and stable cracks on the figure which can be seen in the photos.
