Ewe figure, Ghana and Togo
“THE RED LADY”
9” / 23cm tall
Ex Jeff Rasmussen
An interesting Ewe figure covered in a red pigment with small beads for eyes. The red raffia was a later addition to the figure (I think) and I’ve thought about removing it a couple of times but ended up leaving it on. It’s attached with a glue or resin. The look on the face is a little haunting with its mouth wide open. It appears to me that the figure has been ritually fed. There is a piece of rope attached through a hole at the top of the head and there’s a cowrie shell attached to it. There is also another cowrie attached to a rope that is wrapped around the legs. She immediately got the nickname The Red Lady when I got her, and it stuck.
