Palm Wine Cup, Kuba or related peoples, D.R.C.
8” / 20.3cm
wood, pigment
ex private US collection
I have had this cup for many years, and it is the last of my Kuba cups remaining in my collection. I’ve had cups that were more interesting, and ones with a lot of great patterns on them, but this one has always remained my favorite for its simplicity.
On various ceremonial occasions, men and women in many parts of Africa consumed a beverage/wine made from the raffia palm. Men would also drink palm wine in the evenings when they gathered to discuss the affairs of the community. The carved and often elaborately decorated cups often expressed the owner’s status within the community.
