Prestige Scepter, Luba
wood, copper, aluminum, iron
ex private US collection
40” / 101cm tall
sold with a custom base
An interesting scepter with an iron lower section with a spear-tip end, presumably so it could be inserted into the ground instead of used as a weapon. The top section is wood covered in copper and aluminum, both of which were used on prestigious objects, and is attached to the iron part of it by the wood being inserted into a hollow section and held on by a nail on each side. The janus-faces on the top section seem to me to have a male face on one side and a female face on the other.
I saw one fairly identical at the NY Tribal Art Show many years ago.
