Prestige Staff known as khunia or mbweci or muquixi, Songo culture, Angola
wood, pigment
late 19th/early 20th century
Staffs among the Songo are often surmounted by birds, horse and riders, and sometimes figures. In several examples the figures are carved on top of staffs that look like this one with various geometric carvings in the top section. I have a large collection of staffs and sticks, and this one has always been one of my favorites. It shows good signs of age and use, and has a lot of varied and interesting geometric designs carved into it with minor loss in one section which is visible in the photos.
