Kwere figural gourd, Tanzania

9 inches / 23 cm tall
gourd, wood, metal, rope
ex private European collection
ex Native Auction, Brussels

I love the small and wonderful mwana hiti figure as the stopper/dipper on this one. Gourds such as this were mainly used for medicines, ointments, pigments, sacred oils and symbolic substances. Gourds with anthropomorphic stoppers/dippers were sometimes placed on top of a small stool and served as an ancestor figure. I am offering such a stool on my website, click here to se it.

As with most gourds it doesn't stand up well on its own and I don't have a plastic ring that fits it well so I use the Nigerian bracelet in the photos when displaying it. The bracelet is not included with the gourd.
