Yoruba Ibeji figure, Igbomina from Offa
9.4” tall
ex Zemanek
ex private collection, Berlin, Germany
This ibeji figure is full of triangular forms and flat planes that make up various body parts. What I enjoy most are the triangular negative spaces that are created between the arms and the torso and between the legs as a result. I also enjoy how the carver chose to carve the front of the legs in a sweeping flattened curve that narrows at the top of the foot while the back of the legs is carved with sharp straight lines. It is interesting to me from every perspective, but the one I enjoy most is the view from the back and I actually display the figure with the back facing out.
